I know I haven't blogged for ages and my fan club are no doubt wondering what has happened to me. I thought I'd write a post in memory of the intellectual giant Christopher Hitchens. I think its fair to say that Hitchens never lost a debate and was one of the greatest thinkers who has ever lived. Hitchens led an almost perfect live giving a moral example to us all and putting christians to shame. He Only every used logic in his debates unlike people such as william lane craig who simply fall back on dishonest retoric. Hitchens was a fountain on knowledge and knew loads of well researched facts on any topic. No wonder Christians ran away scared from him.

The Season of the WItch

I saw the film season of the witch at the weekend and the first two thirds were very historically acurate. It showed how a handful of crusaders would trot around Europe going from town to town killing millions of innocent people simple because they thought their sky daddy wanted them to. It showed how the church used violence to bully people into seeing their truth. It showed how villages were killing anyone that might possibly be a witch and how supersition drowns people and utters spells where science would have found a medical cure. Unfotunatly after displaying such historical acuracy for the first two thirds of the movie the last part was rubbish showing some cgi devil and magic. Shame, what started of as a good film could have had such a rubbish ending.

How did my Mithras challenge go

Well this year I sent out christmas cards but crossed out the word christmas and wrote in mithras above it. The only negative comment was somebody at work who told me to get a life. A surprising number of people just seemed to ignore the fact I was wishing the a merry mithermas instead of chritmas however I did have one interesting conversation with a person at my local supermarket and they agreed to watch zeitgeist the movie however tried explaining the amazing similarities between jesus and mithras through mithras plagarising old testament propheses however they couldnt explain how they knew jesus wasnt also a rip of frpm old testament propheses.

Imagine that you woke up one morning and the words 'I exist - love god' were written in the sky. Would that be conclusive proof that god exists. Well no, it could be that the vatican somehow discovered how to write words in the sky and are tricking us. Or maybe we could turn to paralel universe theory in which case everytime a cloud moves a bit two universes are created, one with the one cloud formation in and another with a different cloud formation. Over enough paralel universes all containing randomly shaped clouds, it would hardly be surpsing that one of them contained clouds that spelled out the words 'i exist - love god' Here lies the problem for the theist, whatever evidence you provide for your skydaddy us atheists will find an alternative explanation. Therefore your sky daddy hypothesis is unfalsafiable and as any atheist logic book will tell you, if a theory is unfalsafiable then it cannot be true.

Now as some of you may know, Steven Hawkings has proven that with gravity universes like our own will explode into being without any cause. Therefore we dont need a sky daddy. Now the maths and physics behing Hawkings thorey are a to complicated for most of the readers of my blog to understand however Hawking is a very intelligent person so if he says it then there must be good evidence to back it up. Ofcourse, many anti-science people will argue against Hawkings conclusive arguments but I would rather follow science than christian aplogists saying sorry that science has disprovoed their fairy in the sky.

Now Phil Plhait has done a controverisal talk called dont be a dick Loads of other atheist blogs are commenting on it so i thought id add my own thoughts. You see, we should be dicks towards christians and proud of it. Richard dawkins sums it up nicely here:

I am more interested in the fence-sitters who havenât really considered the question very long or very carefully. And I think that they are likely to be swayed by a display of naked contempt. Nobody likes to be laughed at. Nobody wants to be the butt of contempt.

So basically, by being rude to Christians and calling them names we bully them into becoming free thinkers. Clearly this works. Who sells more books? Phil Plait or Richard Dawkins. Who has the most popular blog? PZMyers or Phil Phait. We should be dicks and give christians the contempt they diserve.

dinesh vs loftus

the debate between john loftus and dinesh dsosa is online for people to listen to. Now john didn't do as bad as some people are saying, however i will try and give a fair review:

John
Johns opening speech was amazing - my only critisim is that he quotes a beker person who says that history is all in the mind. later on in the debate loftus claims that he doesnt agree with beker which makes me wonder why he used arguments in his opening statement which he himself doesnt agree with. Surly there are enough good arguments for athism without having to use arguments you dont like.

John says that history is an invalid subject but then claims he can know that jesus was a doomsday prophet, that the spanish inqisition took place etc. you cant claim history is invalid only to use it yourself. if i were john i would have accepted history and then brought up the similarities between jesus and mithras.

John understandably sounded pissed of. rather than calling dinesh brainwashed (even if thats true) he should have answerd his non-arguments.

loftus claimed that he became an atheist after reading lots of books. this is not true - he became an atheist after comiting adultery and getting pissed of with his church. John claims that was once a top apologist and if he was then john must have read lots of atheist books before becoming an atheist and had no problem with these books when he was a christian.

Johns closing statment was incoherent and i didnt undertstand what he was saying.

Dinesh
he was comiting logical fallacys left right and center. his jokes werent funny and he had no arguments. he misquoted steven hawking because hawking does not believe in a singularity model. Dinesh also acused john of lying which is unfair - ok john was overstating his case in saying that all cosmologists agree with his quantum tuneling model of the universe but this isnt lying.

So to conclude. john didnt win the debate but dinesh lost it.

logical fallacies on tekton

JP Holding (aka bob turkel) really needs to learn some basic logic. His website is full of examples of text book examples of logical fallacies. To demonstrate this i went through his homepage and found ten on the home page alone:

1.by naming the authors of the articles on tekton he is comiting the apeal to authority falacy. for example 'william lane craig on preterism' is a classic example of this
2.loaded language. 'trusting the new testament' assumes that the new testament is trustworthy.
3.the subtitle 'education and pologetics ministry' is an equovication between the words education and apologetics.
4.having a last updated date is example of cronological snobbery. something is true independantly of when it was written so making out bob turkel regualy updates the website is irelevant.
5.there is a cartoon picture of a scholar, this is a false analogy
6.the apologetics encyclopedia is an appeal to ignorance as if falls back on bob turkels ignroance of stuff
7.boasting aabout the fact tekton have 1500 articles is an appeal ad populum
8.the bullet point 'how personable is god' is a loaded question as it presposes god exists
9.describing theologyweb as an exclusive place for debate is a hasty generalisation (and indeed there are plenty of other places for debate)
10.the tekton e-block bullet points form a non-sequiturd

now seeing as this is the home page, im sure the articles themselves contain far more logical errors. Now lets ignore that and be generour and assume there are ten logical falacies on a page. thats 10x1500 which for those who arent any good at maths is 150000 errors. So the bottom line is this:

Firstly, you need more than one house for a town and archaologists have only found 1. Secondly, archaologists make mistakes and even produce forgeries so wheather it is genuine is controversial. in short, the view nazareth didnt exist when jebus was alive still stands strong despite this new evidence.

You may remember that i bloged about francis collins becoming director of the nih not that long ago. Well now P Z Myers has blogged about it on a similar theme. Its not that francis collins isnt a good scientist as such, or that he did a bad job running the human genome project but he isnt an atheist and only atheists should be allowed to hold important jobs. Now, Francis Collins is a very nice man, he doesn't SEEM stupid, and I think Bill Maher was mistaken when he told me, on television, that Collins believes in a talking snake. But he presumably believes the things his Biologos Foundation advocates, for example the view that God causes miracles to happen (illustrated with a picture of Jesus walking on water). Can somebody who holds such anti-scientific and downright silly beliefs really be qualified to run the NIH? Isn't he disqualified, not by whether or not he leaves his beliefs outside the laboratory and the committee room, but by the very fact that he is capable of holding such beliefs at all?

As you know, the bible says that people lived thousands of years. I think there are 3 explanations and i ask you to decide which is the most plausable:

The bible is true
That people really live to thousands of years even though science has shown that people dont live that long. This option would only work if youre an idiot planning on throwing science out of the window

The bible is misunderstood
That we are misunderstanding how they measured ages when the bible was written. The problem is that your bible was translated by a proper translator and so is unlikely to be mistranslated.

The people who wrote the bible were stupid
The bible was written before scientists discovered how long people live and before theyd worked when people die they just guessed and got it wrong.

Ckearky option 3 is the best explanation for this and i hope we all agree that the bible just got it wrong.

Clarifying my last post

Firstly, somebody called crusader for truth wrote on my last blog post:

More atheist discrimination

ive noticed a common method of discrimination on the internet. Often websites will ask if you are a robot (with a yes/no) option or a set of random words you need to type. However this assumes that people arent just biological robots which is contary to what richard dawkins teaches.

How people should think

I think there are some fundamental things which need explaining. Most xians dont seem to get these rules and it caused them to come up with really stupid arguments. They are:

1)If it supports atheism then its proberly true. You see, xians have a reputation for lying and getting things wrong(just look at the creationist movement) whereas atheists dont. Lets put it like this, if someone came to you and said they saw a flying pig...then someone else said they had evidence the first person hadnt seen a flying pig. Who would you believe? So information which supports atheism is more reliable.

2)If it supports xianity then it isnt true. The reverse of point 1. people dont rise from the dead so any argument that suggests otherwise is invalid

3)If its on the internet then its proberly true (taking into account points 1 and 2) The internet isnt run by the governement or the church and so anyone can post the truth on it.

This ties into the sceptical aproach that only believs things backed up by good evidence and logic.

Now I think ive hit gold with this one. I was thinking about how bart ehrman makes a big thing of how we dont have the origional manuscripts for the bible and so dont know what the origionals said. Well what if we use his argument and apply it to the question if wheather jebus existed? Suppose none of the origional manuscripts mention jebus and every reference to jebus in the bible were a textual variant. Well, then the bible would have never mentioned jebus. I went to see x men origin wolverine and in it a character says that their powers arent gifts because gifts can be given back. Now when I see a movie I tend to think more deeply about it than most people, due to my intellect, and so realised what the character was saying. If a sky daddy gave us gifts then we would be able to give them back. Yet we cant. So when xians talk about gifts we must wonder how they are gifts when we are unable to return them. Now xians often say that people have a sky daddy shapped hole in there hearts and that they need to become xians to fill it. This is complete and utter nonsense. You see a sky daddy, if they existed, would be infinitely big and there heart relitively small. Therefore you cant have an infinitely big hole in your tiny heart. Moreover, with a hole in your heart (sky daddy shaped or otherwise) would kill you and youd be dead. As you can see, this is yet another bad argument from the religion that gave us crusades and which hunts.

I use to think that A.N Wilson was intelligent (Richard Dawkins even quotes him in the God Delusion as on page 119 it says "historically it is complete nonsense as A.N Wilson in Jesus and Robin Lane Fox in the Unauthorised version (among others) have pointed out")

So A.N Wilson knew that there was no historical evidence for jebus, was friends with all the intelligent people and a top journalist. So what went wrong? It appears that just as antony flew suffered from dementures and converted to christianity A.N Wilson has done something similar. This newspaper article explains how this happens.

Well william lane craig has written a book called the son rises* Well he clearly uses a play on words in the title with 'the sun rises' and 'the son rises' which shows that even xians notice the similarity between the words son and sun. Thus the resurection was copied from sun god worship.

Why is it that the date of easter changes each year? Xians often say that easter is to celebrate a certain number of years since jebus died however if the date of easter keeps changing then it cant possibly be on the same day jebus died.

It also raises another stunning question...why did the bible writers record jebus genealogies in great detail however not record the date of easter incase people wanted to celebrate it afterwards. Afterall, they had festivals in jebuss day so the thought must have occured to them. Is it because easter never happened?

Most xian arguments comit the 'god of the gaps' logical fallacy. They assume that simply because the atheist cannot completely answer there argument then their sky daddy must exist. So for example they argue that because atheists cannot explain where there universe came from their sky daddy must have made it yet ignore the fact that scientists of the future might find the answer. Or simply because atheists cannot explain the historical evidence for the resurrection* then Jebus rose from the dead. But how do they know that historians of the future wont invent a killer argument that nobody at the moment has thought of?

Infact atheists are less arogant and more open minded as we simply aknowledge that we dont know. Now i dont meant that we dont know in the classical sense (as in we are not agnostics) and we know that there sky daddy doesnt exist just as we know that fairies dont exist at the bottom of our gardens. But if we dont know then we should know it isnt true. I think that makes sense.

I was reminded of ray comforts banana argument and realised that it backfires. The origional argument is as follows:

1.Bananas are easy to eat
2.therefore his sky daddy made them

But we can actually turn the tables around:

1. cakes dont grow on trees
2. if your skydaddy existed why did they make bananas easy to east but make cakes difficult to make
3.therefore cakes would grow on trees if xianity were true

Ive just come accross this article on darwin. At first I thought this simon conway morris guy who wrote it was an idiot writing completely outside of his field of expertise. Thn Richard Dawkins himself posted the following comment:

Now how can someone become a top scientist and yet come up with stupid arguments like simon conway morris does? The same can be said for people like fraces collins. As far as I can see there are two options:

1.There actually are good arguments for a sky daddy (this one is blatently false)

2.The best point in history is the one where scientists are most able to verify his/her authentity/existance
3.The best time to prove if someone if a sky daddy will be when science can put probes in someones head and detect with 100% acuracy if they are lying
4. Science cannot put probes in someones head yet and so have no way of know if someone really is the son of a sky daddy
5.Therefore your sky daddy hasnt revealed themselves in history yet
6. Xianity claims that jebus was their sky daddy revealing himself, when logically a real sky daddy would be still wating for science to invent head probes
7.therefore your silly religion isnt true
